Visa

Myanmar-State-MapEvery tourist needs a visa to enter Myanmar for a max 28 days stay. The visa can be applied at home country´s embassy or online . The online fee is 50 US-Dollars and it will be sent by email after having filled out the application form and paid online by credit card.

The Myanmar visa can also be applied for in the Myanmar embassy in Bangkok (132 Sathorn Nuea Road; open only 9-12 on working days; pick up only 15.30-16.30; Karte anzeigen ). This option is much cheaper, but much more complicated, and it is always very full there.

Traveling in Myanmar

Every place in Myanmar can be reached from Yangon or Mandalay by airplanes, buses, trains, boats or taxis. Allthough trains can not be recommended, because they are old, slow, full, dirty and mostly delayed. For some regions tourists need to ask for permission to travel, and some spots are still closed for foreigners. There are special offices to ask for actual informations and approvals. Due to the ongoing fights and political instable situation, journeys to Kachin State and northern Chan State can be dangerous.

All national airlines operate from the domestic terminals and fly to every major city in the coutry: Yangon Airways, Air Myanmar, AirMandalay, AirBagan, Asian Wings, Golden Myanmar, Yadanarpon, Myanmar National Airlines and Air KBZ.

Overland buses operate from the bus terminals and connect all bigger towns. Since the streets are not in good conditions and have only two lanes, the journeys last many hours.

It is possible to travel short and long distances by taxi. Drivers love to offer this service and some are quite good guides who speak english quite well. Taxis are not much faster then buses, but the advantage is traveling individually and flexible, and taxis will pick up guests from the hotel.

A very special way of traveling in Myanmar is by boats. This can be done on the Ayeyarwaddy (Irrawaddy) river from Yangon up to Bagan, Mandalay and till Bhamo in the north. Special hotel cruising ships (e.g. The Road to Mandalay) with private luxury rooms on board are available as well as smaller and cheaper trading boats without cabins.

Weather and climate in Myanmar

The climate in Myanmar is tropical monsoon climate in the south (Yangon, the Ayeyewaddy delta and southwards) with a rainy season from June to October and a dry and sunny season between November and May. That period is the best traveling time. As well for northern Myanmar, where the weather is hot and dry most times of the year. Temperatures may rise up to over 40 degrees Celsius in March to June. In the central region around Mandalay/Bagan there is no rain in the hot weather period. In the winter months from December to February temperatures may fall to under 20 degrees Celsius for some days.

Actual exchange rates

Note: US-Dollar is still the preferred currency to pay with, but the notes must be in fine conditions (not dirty, not ripped, not bended). Otherwise no one will accept them. From december 2015 on, the national currency Kyat (pron. Chut) should be officially accepted everywhere.
